Montrose Community Band Board of Directors

Minutes from January 20, 2006

The Board of Directors of the Montrose Community Band met Friday, January 20th, 2005 at the Zion Luther Church at 7:40 p.m. Those members in attendance were: Lyle Miller, Jim Gibson, and Yvonne McChesney. Herb Probasco was also in attendance. A quorum was not present so we could not officially vote on anything.

Yvonne asked what should be done with the minutes. She was instructed to keep them in her book.

Minutes

The Minutes were read individually and accepted as written.

Treasurer's Report

Jim Gibson passed out the revised budget. He had a question about the percussion rental, MCB pays MHS for the rental of the equipment at the HS. $25 each percussionist, we only have three currently. Lyle will contact Andy Burke for this semester's fee.

Supporting members have increased. In the revised budget the Pavilion rental and donations were changed to reflect the Spring Concert.

Finance

It is the opinion of the Finance Committee that donations should be increased. Tom Kenning suggested band co-sponsors. His bank could be a full sponsor. Bob Eisenman had applied to the National Endowment of the Arts, we are still waiting for a reply. The Colorado Council of the Arts still needs to be applied to.

We need to raise money for a trailer to haul equipment in.

Yvonne is to contact Emily Johanessen regarding the philanthropist in Ridgway that supports the arts.

George Van Allen will pursue getting donations from Wal-Mart.

Membership

No membership committee chair.

Publicity

Herb Probasco reports that the newsletter is in the process of being developed. Nothing else to do at the moment, the Spring Concert is still too far away to start advertising.

Uniform Committee

Yvonne McChesney reports that we still need one vest to be made for Holly Rae and Tim Breckon's uniform was returned by Martha and Keith Gilder.

Website Committee

Yvonne McChesney has applied for inclusion in The National Association of Concert Bands website. She has not heard back yet.

Music Director

Carl Bivins was not in attendance.

Nominating Committee

It is suggested that Joe Reitz and Byron McNew be recommended for Board Members.

Yvonne McChesney asked if the Family Membership Dues should still be $35, all those in attendance agreed.

Old Business

Jim Gibson asked who had the second mail key, Lyle Miller said he thought he had it at home.

Jim Gibson has been attempting to contact Carl Bivins regarding the Band's music which is at his house. He has not been able to get a hold of him. The questions were raised as to where the music should be kept and should everyone turn in the copies. Yvonne suggested that the marches be kept since they are played frequently. Lyle suggested that the decision be made by the new board.

Jim Gibson asked about the Trade Name renewal, Herb Probasco and Cheri Derfler-Bailey were on the last one. It should be Lyle Miller and Jim Gibson the current president and vice president.

The Sax Ensemble will play for the Arts Council, Jim wanted to know who should pay for the music they needed to buy, the band or ensemble. It is the ensembles' decision, Jim will have the band own the music.

Jim Gibson has given the janitor at MHS and Paul Meyer, the flat bed truck driver, gift cards for their help.

New Business

Spring Concert is officially March 26th at 3 pm. Dress rehearsal is set for March 20th at the pavilion.

Yvonne mentioned that we need decoration on the stage for the concerts - we are pretty drab. Someone mentioned that Alpine Floral let Columbine borrow arrangements for a concert one year and Shaileen should be asked to handle the flowers for the Spring Concert.

Yvonne mentioned that Rachel had an idea of wearing different hats for the songs. Or we could just have some people put on specific hats. It would make it entertaining.

We need a new band director, Carl said he would help us find a new director but no one has heard from him.

Yvonne asked Herb if he had been able to reach his contact for the New Orleans Concert Band. . He will contact him again around our 4th of July Concert if he hasn't contacted us.

Yvonne asked if the minutes should be posted on the website for all to read and it was agreed that she should.

Yvonne brought up that it might be a good thing to have a Members business directory on the website we could patronize each other. She could have bought the black bow ties through Dave Loncar's wife's business for less than through Best Buy Uniforms had she realized it. The band should vote on that at the annual meeting.

Jim Gibson suggested another new member - Joe Aregon.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:32 pm.

These minutes have been corrected and approved by the Montrose Community Band Board of Directors.
